Seghesio Sonoma County Zinfandel 2018

If there is a producer with a better track record for making kick a$$ Zinfandel than Seghesio then we haven’t heard of them! Vintage after vintage, Seghesio cooks up a fantastic assortment of Zins starting with their iconic Sonoma County bottling. The 90 Point 2018 Sonoma County Zin is an explosive example of the best of what California has to offer. One quick swirl and sniff is all it takes to create a visceral, pulse quickening response. A bounty of mid-summer flowers is entangled with darker notes of warm brown sugar and ground Ceylon cinnamon, each becoming more pronounced with each passing swirl. The palate is every bit as striking as the nose with the kind of rowdy fruit and spice that’ll get you hooting and hollering if you aren’t careful with it! The entry has a rather sanguine feel to it with concentrated flavors of raspberry puree and tart red cherries sitting triumphantly astride blood orange liqueur, fraise liqueur, cracked pepper, and grated ginger. Every sip has an electricity to it that makes me excited for the next one. Drinking it generates the sort of excited momentum that eventually ends in a crescendo when you pair this beauty with a succulent slow smoked baby back rib or a piece of ooey gooey New York style pepperoni pizza.
Food Pairing:
I love the way a nice plump Zinfandel like the 2018 Sonoma County Zin from Seghesio pairs up with tomato sauce. Whether it’s a skim coat on a super thin Neapolitan pizza or a thick layer between sheets of pasta in a lasagna your mouth is going to thank you for the hookup!
