During the darkest part of the economic downturn Pine Ridge created a second label called Forefront in order to help keep the lights on when their high end Estate Cabernets weren’t flying off the shelves. They’re since moved away from the second label but our local Pine Ridge supplier managed to grab a few cases of Forefront Cab from the winery before they sold out of the 2012 vintage. This Cab is legit. Barrel fermented and raised in mostly new French oak, it shows clear cut evidence of high end winemaking practice in every sip. The nose is awash with sultry scents of toasty oak, sweet vanilla, cigar box, and blackberries on the vine warmed by the mid-summer sun. The palate is rich and intense with sweet tannin providing a sturdy frame on which to hang flavors of cherry cordial, blueberry pie filling, and bittersweet blackcurrants. The finish is long and ever so slightly coarse which keeps the wine feeling like a serious, food friendly, age-worthy bottle of high-end Cabernet. We think this will be the last chance to get the 2012 Forefront Cab so grab your bottles up today because once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Food Pairing:Pine Ridge Winery’s 2012 Forefront Cab was obviously built with food pairing in mind. There are lots of things you could serve it with successfully but, in my mind at least, it’s a classic steak wine. It has a full on Saturday night style. So you’ll want to really church it up and pair it with a great piece of meat and a couple of delicious, full flavored sides.
