The leaves are quickly turning out there, the Broncos are playing again, and tomorrow is the first official day of Fall! We’re really excited for the return of cooler weather because we know that cool weather means that it’s time to start drinking more hearty red wine. This week we caught our local distributor in a moment of weakness and scored an outstanding deal on a solidly built 90 Point Red, the 2015 Dona Paula Estate Malbec. This sumptuous Red may not be profound but it is downright delicious. Bountiful notes of mocha and warm blueberry jam burst from the glass to greet you as soon as you pour a splash. The palate is classic Malbec with such lovely richness and roundness. Geneous flavors of sun baked plums, chocolate covered cherries, sweet vanilla, and just a kiss of raspberry jam all come flooding onto the scene as soon as you get your first sip. Open this bottle, pour glasses for everyone around, and then repeat until you’re all sorts of happy! It’s as easy as that. You’d be crazy not to grab a 6 pack, at least, this weekend because this is the kind of bottle that you are going to find yourself reaching for again and again!
Food Pairing:
I love pairing Malbec with Mexican food and I really think that the 2015 Dona Paula has the right style to work well in that context. My favorite thing lately is to season some boneless New York Strip steaks with guajillo chili powder, cumin, and Mexican oregano then grill them off alongside some similarly seasoned quartered white onions and big chunks of poblano peppers for some really great fajitas. The nice thing is that you can do the prep way ahead, slicing and seasoning everything and throwing it onto a sheet pan in the fridge so that all you have to do when your guests arrive is fire up the grill and get rolling.
