Tábula "Damana" Ribera del Duero Crianza 2013

The Spanish wine industry is undergoing a renaissance. Ancient vines and modern winemaking techniques are producing some of the most engaging, ageworthy, and layered wines on the planet. And, in part because of the sad state of the Spanish economy, there are unbelievable values to be found by those willing to hunt them down. This week we have just such a wine. Pure, unadulterated Tempranillo from one of our favorite producers in Ribera del Duero, Bodegas y Vinedos Tabula. The 2013 Crianza “Damana” is utterly pleasure-bent. Darkly complected in the glass, it opens with an alluring perfume of pipe tobacco, violets, vanilla, and sun baked plums. On the palate you’ll find a wealth of ripe fruit character leading the charge. Flavors of blackberry preserves, cassis, black currants, and plum all make their presence felt as soon as the wine touches your tongue. As the wine moves from the entry to the finish fine grained tannins begin to come to the foreground which serve to keep the wine feeling serious and food friendly. Persistent notes of slatey soil, toasty oak, berry jam, and baking spice give the finish such a sense of place that everyone who has a sip is sure to stop and take notice. Drink this one with a hearty meal today or toss it into the cellar where it should continue to rock and roll for 3 or 4 more years.
Food Pairing:
This is a serious bottle of wine and it deserves a serious meal. Blackberries have been really cheap lately at the grocery store so I’ve been making blackberry syrup by gently boiling and crushing fresh blackberries with just a bit of sugar. Then I strain the syrup and toss it in the fridge. I like to take the syrup and cut it 50/50 with ruby port which I reduce to about ⅓ of its original volume. Then I add the juices from a piece of meat that is resting after being grilled and finish it with a pat of cold butter off the heat just before plating. You make that sauce and serve it with pork tenderloin medallions, filet mignon, lamb chops, or duck breast then pair it up with the 2013 Damana Crianza and your guests will do backflips!
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
