Premium French Syrah is some of the most age-worthy, thought provoking, and complex wine in the world. High end bottlings from the Northern Rhone regularly fetch hundreds if not thousands of dollars per bottle because of their unique style and structure. This week’s special, Les Epices Syrah from Domaine Les Yeuses, is a bit more modest in price than those apex predators from places like Cornas and Cote Rotie but it offers you a window into the soul of the grape that is all too often closed to folks without stratospheric wine budgets. A darkly complected, cool weather Red, the 2016 Les Epices Syrah begins with a suggestive perfume of woodsmoke, tar, balsamic, and blueberry cobbler. On the palate you’ll find a wine that deftly bridges the gap between the dark and the light as it delivers appealing notes of cassis liqueur, blueberry jam, and crushed black cherries all the while maintaining a sense of freshness and levity (probably due in large measure to the fact it is barely an adolescent in its development). The finish offers no hard edges but there is still some nicely balanced, food friendly acidity in addition to lingering notes of pencil lead, cinnamon, and game. With the hunters out in the woods and the snow beginning to fall, I can’t think of a better Red to stock the wine cabinet with than this!
Food Pairing:
This beautiful French Syrah is going to pair up very well with a wide range of Fall flavors. We just served it at the house with these fantastic, slow roasted elk meatballs the other day because a friend brought us a bunch of ground elk from his freezer. I think you would be singing if you served this alongside elk, venison, or even duck but there’s no reason it wouldn’t be right at home with lamb chops, blue cheese studded burgers, or just some cheese and crusty bread. Suffice it to say, this stuff is delicious!
