Umbria lies just North of Rome in the heart of Italy, a land famous for producing beautiful Sangiovese and meaty Sagrantino. This week we have 2 brilliant, certified Organic Reds from one of our favorite Umbrian producers, Moretti Omero. Terre di Giano, a lovely little Umbrian table wine composed mainly of Sangiovese, is plump, fresh, and exuberant with just enough weight to hold up to casual meals like pasta or pizza. Omero’s Montefalco Rosso, on the other hand, contains a generous dose of Sagrantino giving this structured Red the kind of intensity and power that connoisseurs demand for pairing with hearty meals. The Montefalco Rosso opens with a masculine nose of cigar humidor, worn leather, dried rose petals, and freshly toasted bread. It offers the sort of perfume that is sure to leave you guessing because it trends so far away from the common, easy to identify fruity notes. The palate is similarly structured with blackberry, black currant, and cassis slowly giving way to tar, game, cedar, and olive tapenade. A touch of chewy tannin lingers in between sips making a bite of rich food seem very appealing. Omero’s 2015 Montefalco Rosso is drinking exceptionally well right now with that nice tannic backbone holding the line, but I think that this bottle is still very much on the evolutionary upswing with plenty of potential to deliver a lot of non-fruit flavor as it continues to age for the next 3 or 4 years. Cellaring a few bottles will surely yield handsome dividends!
Food Pairing:This darn wine is just begging for some creamy polenta topped with a slowly simmered piece of pork. In New Orleans we have an old traditional dish that I am quite fond of called grillades and grits. Thinly sliced pork is slowly simmered in a red wine and tomato gravy then spooned over a bed of creamy grits before being finished with a gentle drizzle of good olive oil. I can’t think of a better pairing for a meaty Italian Red like this week’s special!
