When Rioja is good there are very few wines in the world that can compete with it in terms of layered complexity and modest pricepoint. This week we have a ridiculous deal on a 90 point Rioja that does everything right. Even at full price the 2015 Raiza Crianza is a smoking deal with it’s wonderful nose of sun baked plums, creme de violet, toasty oak, and cigar box. At this week’s special price it is a stunning value that is certainly worthy of a multi-bottle buy. Medium bodied and full of ripe fruit, the palate offers lush layers of strawberries macerated in brandy, blueberry jam, and fresh pomegranate juice. There is so much fruit initially that you might mistake it for a New World wine but then the finish begins to pick up momentum and quickly reminds you that this ain’t California, it’s Spain! Lingering hints of exotic incense, Chinese five spice, baking chocolate, tamarind, and mineral rich soil deliver the sort of layered complexity that is simply not found at such a modest price. This bottle is right in its happy place today but there is no risk of it falling off over the next few years if you happen, like me, to like your Rioja a little older. Stock up this weekend and then drink this beauty through 2022 or so.
Food Pairing:
This bottle has such lift and freshness despite being more than 4 years old. It will pair up neatly with a whole host of foods from a classic seafood paella to grilled sausages with peppers and onions right and on through a bbq rubbed double cut bone-in pork chop. It is the kind of bottle that just begs to be sipped. Heck you could easily serve it all by itself if you really like to savory the complexity in a classically styled Old World Red.
