Summer is wrapping up and we know you’ve got a lot going on. So let us do some of the thinking for you. We’ve got a brilliant, thought provoking, age-worthy Cotes du Rhone from one of our favorite producers for only $9.99. Domaine Coste Chaude was farming their vineyard in Visan organically before it was even cool. Their 2017 Florilege cuvee is so good that it is going to blow you away. I regularly taste $25 Rhone style Reds from California that don’t compare to this ten dollar Florilege in terms overall complexity or impact. The nose is beautiful with seductive layers of fresh violets, cold brew coffee, cracked peppercorns, black olives, and Christmas cake. A wonderful nose like that makes a pretty bold promise and, thank goodness, the 2017 Florilege delivers the goods on the palate too! It’s plump and ripe and juicy with alluring layers of blackberry and black cherry interspersed between nuances of slatey soil, olive tapenade, baking spice, and kirsch liqueur. The finish is a touch spicy but not overbearing making it suitable for a really wide range of food pairing possibilities. What’s more is that this 2017 isn’t even mature yet. The palate is going to continue to flesh out over the next 2 years making this one even more lush and supple. I don’t think you’re going to find a more engaging bottle of Red for this price anywhere!
Food Pairing:
Pair up this lovely 2017 organic Cotes du Rhone with a whole host of meals from grilled salmon to beef bourguignon. It has the style and accessibility to sip it alone as a cocktail but the peppery spice and structure to hold up to dishes that have a nice fat component to them. It is a classic Red table wine from, in my opinion, the best region in the world for table wine, Cotes du Rhone.
