Château Guery Grès Minervois 2017

Chateau Guery is a winery that we recently became acquainted with when we were tasting through a large group of French samples. The Guery wines, to a man, had a purity and sincerity to them that was impossible to ignore, particularly in the increasingly commoditized, paint-by-numbers world of big corporate wine. So, this weekend we would like to share them with you, or loyal “Wine of the week” customers. Guery’s 2017 Minervois Rouge, called Gres from the coarse granitic soil the 35 year old vineyard is planted on, is a frighteningly good wine. A Rhone style blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, it begins with a nose that is as pure and clean as I’ve smelled all year with brilliant violets, mid-summer underbrush, grilled bread, and warm blackberry preserves simmering on the stove. Gosh it’s good! And the palate is even better as it delivers a taught core of crushed cherry and red plum on the entry accented by the kind of minerality that darn near every Napa vintner would kill to be able to deliver in their wines. It finishes with a clean, unencumbered style that feels as at home alongside a perfectly cooked steak au poivre as it does out of a jelly jar on the bar deck. Simply put, buying domestic Red Wine at this pricepoint is a minefield but The 2017 Chateau Guery Minervois “Gres” is a sure thing!
Food Pairing:
I love wine like the 2017 Minervois “Gres” from Chateau Guery because it is so clean and correct. Too often we get wines that are obviously manipulated in the winery resulting in flavors are discernibly out of balance. Not so at Guery where everything is obviously made using traditional methods and techniques. What that means for you is that the wines pair up perfectly with a wide range of meals from light courses like cured meats and cheeses right on through to hearty fare like seared duck breasts with cherry port reduction and toasted walnuts. To call this “bistro wine” wouldn’t do it justice because this is clearly a big step up from vin ordinaire but it has the accessibility and generosity that we are always looking for in our “House Red” which means that you really ought to consider putting aside what you’re doing and come on down to the shop to taste this delicious bottle for free at the tasting bar. It’s mighty darn yummy to sip.
