Veglio Michelino & Figlio Barolo 2015

Barolo is the undisputed king of Northern Italian Reds! This week we have the privilege of offering you a famously good deal on the 92 Point 2015 Veglio Michelino & Fils Barolo. This killer Nebbiolo offers the kind of incredible density of fruit that is rarely witnessed in this often edgy grape. What a treat it is to drink! The nose opens with a sexy perfume of dried rose petals, damp cedar, warm baking spices, and a touch of candied orange zest. On the palate you’ll find an abundance of firm tannin, typical of Nebbiolo, but the generosity of the exceptional 2015 vintage is on full display as the wine offers sexy layers of kirsch liqueur, Morello cherries, and ripe red currants. The balance and symmetry stand out in this impressively ageworthy example. Lingering hints of nutmeg, tar, pipe tobacco, and damp cedar unfurl slowly as the wine breathes in the glass leading to a finish that is certainly more savory than sweet. What a treat it is to drink! Even moreso alongside a lovingly prepared petite filet or slow braised lamb shank atop a bed of creamy polenta. Cin cin!
Food Pairing:
Watching this beautiful Barolo unfurl in the glass is a real pleasure. But you’ll need a bit of fat in order to act as a counterpoint to the firm tannin and fresh acidity that it brings. I love to serve Barolo with slowly simmered dishes like osso buco, braised lamb shanks, or even boeuf bourguignon. And I especially love to eat those kinds of meals during mid-winter when having that good comfort food makes me feel all warm inside.
