Domeco d Jaruata Lar de Sotomayor Vendimia Selecctionada Rioja 2010

What better way is there to celebrate Father’s Day than with a highly rated bottle of red and a nice steak? This week we have the pleasure of offering you a ridiculous value on a fantastic young Tempranillo from Spain famous Rioja region. The 2010 Lar de Sotomayor Vendimia Seleccionada is such an attractive and thought provoking red. Silky and smooth on the entry, it is clearly built with pleasure in mind. But it’s much more than a mere hedonist’s delight. This polished red has all of the trappings of classic Rioja from its exotic, floral nose to the supple entry and the long, mineral laden finish. Decant it for an hour or two and then pair it up with a perfectly grilled steak for a real treat this weekend. Or stash a few bottles in your cellar and forget them for about 5 years so that they can slowly become even more polished, refined, and dynamic. But be warned, it is virtually guaranteed to sell out quickly because deals like this one are just too good for most of our loyal “Wine of the Week” customers to pass up.
On to the Tasting Notes:
The 2010 Lar de Sotomayor Rioja is a wine that is worth getting excited about. It is as clear an expression of the direction that modern winemaking practices are taking Rioja as any I have seen over the last several years. It displays a kind of levity that seems incompatible with the level of richness that it possesses. And yet, all it will take is one sip for you to instinctually understand how that juxtaposition can exist. The nose is awash with sleek scents of worn glove leather, wilted violets, powdered granite, exotic incense, and aged cigars in their boxes. It is the kind of nose that simply cannot be ignored. You will want to return to it over and over again to attempt to comprehend the vast array of scents that is possesses. The palate expands on that theme with a wonderfully supple entry. It begins gently and then builds momentum quickly as it washes over the palate leading to the sort of finish that will stop you dead in your tracks. Wonderful flavors of ripe black plums mingle with hints of blueberry jam, kirsch liqueur, and sweet blackberries. As it continues on to the finish the wine turns pithy and ever so slightly bitter allowing more and more old vine minerality to come to the foreground. Hints of blackberry seeds, anise, cedar, and slate linger indefinitely on the finish. Supple yet clearly present tannins give focus to the this otherwise broad and expansive red while perfectly balanced acidity ensures that your mouth will water for a bite of food after each sip is gone. It will undoubtedly age effortlessly for 5 to 7 years in the cellar during which time it will become more and more supple, refined, and complex. Lovers of Tempranillo, Rioja, and Spanish red in general simply cannot afford to pass this deal up. It is a truly special wine and one that deserves a place in your cellar. But, like I mentioned earlier, this one is at an extremely high risk of selling out. So please give us a call today to reserve your bottles.
Food Pairing:
If you plan to serve a bottle of the 2010 Lar de Sotomayor Vendimia Seleccionada this weekend then I would encourage you to be sure to leave yourself enough time to decant it for an hour or two before dinner. It is a little tight and backward initially but, given some air it opens right up. Pair it with a piece of beef or bison filet, collard greens boiled with smoked pork shanks, and some herb roasted fingerling potatoes.
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
This price expires 6/16/2013 at 6pm and is limited to in-store quantities.
