Mmmm Mmmm! That’s what you ought to be saying when you taste a good bottle of Cabernet. But all too often you find yourself feeling kind of underwhelmed when you taste an inexpensive domestic Cab, right? Well, this week we’ve got a bottle of Cabernet from one of our all time favorite Washington State producers, Barnard Griffin, that is going to make your mouth all kinds of happy! Don’t get us wrong, this isn’t one of those collectible Cab’s that is destined to occupy hallowed ground in your cellar for the next decade. Instead, it’s meant to occupy the prime real estate on your dining room table this weekend. Sweet scents of baking chocolate and roasted plums grace the nose of this delicious young Cab. Then classic Cabernet notes flavors of blackberries and black currant liqueur come bursting onto the scene, touching every corner of your palate. The finish is all Washington with great dusty cherries and soft, earthy complexity. On to the Tasting Notes:
When we first opened Mile High we had our Washington wines in their own section, separate from their California and Oregon counterparts. But it didn’t take long for us to realize that we needed to set them right next to the rest of the domestic options that we carried because it was clear that Washington was delivering unmatched quality and value. Ever since we made that change our Washington wine sales have sykrocketed and our customers have been thrilled with the selection that we have been able to offer them.
We have carried the wines from Barnard Griffin since day one here and they continually impress us with their varietal character, consistency, and value. This week we’re featuring our current favorite of theirs, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. This Cab does everything right by offering real varietal character with an easy to enjoy style. It begins with a nice dark nose of baked berries, chilled chocolate pie with that yummy graham cracker crust, and this really delicate undercurrent of fresh flowers. It’s not that typically herbaceous Cabernet nose that we often associate with the ones from cooler climates like Bordeaux or Chile. Instead it smells fully ripe and, I think, you’ll find once you taste it that holds true on the palate as well. I get a generous dose of ripe berry fruit initially when I take a sip. As that initial pop of blackberries and currants begins to mellow, hints of toffee, toasty oak, espresso, and tart cherry bitters. The finish is mellow and understated but, by no means wimpy. It offers excellent earthiness that is all too often lacking in the Cab’s from California and too often overabundant in those of Bordeaux.Food Pairing:
The 2013 Barnard Griffin is built with pleasurable sipping and near term consumption in mind. That said, if you want to do more than cocktail this one up then you’ll be well situated if you pair it up with simple meals like burgers, pizza, or a nice grilled bone-in pork chop. It’s a great wine to have around the house because it drinks like a Cab should but it’s got enough ripe, rich fruit to sip well in virtually any context.
