Crápula Gold 5 Monastrell-Syrah (Jumilla) 2013

We've got a bit of cool weather on the horizon this weekend so what better time to offer up a stupid good deal on some hearty Spanish red? Monastrell and Syrah come together in perfect harmony in this powerful blend from Jumilla. Meaty, smoky, layered, and intense, the 2013 Crapula Gold 5 is sure to warm your soul up on a chilly evening. We totally dug the funny name and the bright gold label. We loved the luscious entry and the massive, unabashed style that it brought to the table. And we were in heaven once we found out just how inexpensive it was. Seriously folks, this 92 Point effort is one heck of a value. Pair a bottle up with hearty meal this weekend and then stash a few more of them in your cellar so that you can return to them over the next 3 to 5 years as they slowly shed some of their youthful enthusiasm in favor of a more layered and contemplative drinking experience. But beware, this one is highly likely to sell out. So please stop by the tasting bar this evening to try it for free. We think you'll be shocked by the amount of value it delivers!
On to the Tasting Notes:
The Spanish region Jumilla is known for producing some really ripe, intense, and full flavored Monastrell based reds. This week we have a fantastic example of that style in the Crapula Gold 5. This buxom blend bursts with fruit and spice which is neatly underpinned by that classic Monastrell earthiness. A hedonistic wine today, the Crapula delivers a wealth of rich, juicy fruit flavor with little coaxing. I get some very nice notes of violets and cocoa on the nose as well as a bit of dusty plum that gently fades into the background with each passing sniff. It’s not an explosive nose but it is a beautiful and thought provoking one. An initial sip reveals layers of flavor that run parallel to the nose with a generous pop of ripe berry fruit setting the tone. Plum, blackberry, and black cherry come through at first. Then as that first wave of fruity goodness begins to fade darker complected notes of blueberry jam, pipe tobacco, vanilla, and granitic soil begin to fill in the blanks. A touch of ripe fruit tannin lingers on the finish along with some very nice allspice and mineral, features which I expect to become more evident as this lovely red ages. While the 2013 Crapula Gold 5 is almost certainly going to mature nicely over the next 3 to 5 years, I’d say that it’ll be very difficult to justify delaying gratification for that long since it is so yummy today.
Food Pairing:
I think you’ll find that the Crapula Gold 5 will provide a nice compliment to a wide range of hearty meals. When I sip it it makes me want some bleu cheese. So why not do a dish that uses some nice ripe bleu as a point of emphasis? One of my favorite preparations is to take some nice pork tenderloin medallions and cook them quickly on a very hot grill seasoned only with salt and pepper. Then I like to take a small sauce pan of diced apples that I cooked in reduced apple juice and bourbon adding only a touch of salt, thyme, and black pepper for seasoning. Once they’re softened and the sauce is reduced I add just a pat of butter off the heat and then gently spoon them over the chicken breasts. Afterwards I hit the whole thing with a generous dose of crumbled bleu cheese.
