Once in awhile we run across a wine that is so good and so inexpensive that we all go nuts for it. This week we have just such a wine, the 2014 Marchetti Uve di Montepulciano from our friends at Small Vineyards. This lovely little Tuscan table wine is a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese. It features a ripe rich palate and a smooth easy drinking finish. Appealing hints of plum and leather frame the nose while plush flavors of raspberry preserves, dusty cherries, and a bit of black currant come through on the palate. The finish is lovely with a rounded mouth-feel that is perfect for casual sipping and shows just a touch of tar lingering on the aftertaste that serves as an excellent reminder that this is a classic Tuscan red and not a big ole fruit bomb. Sip this delicious blend alone anytime you want a nice juicy (but not sweet) red or pair it up with BBQ chicken, burgers, or pizza for a nice casual supper.

I bought a case of the 2014 Marchetti Uve di Montepulciano because it is freaking delicious and totally underpriced. We drank a few and gave away a few more as gifts and now it’s time for another case. This wine is silly versatile. I love to have a nice medium bodied, old world red around the house for all those times when I want something juicy and inexpensive but still sincere. I just can’t drink those sweet California red blends, ya know? So I love to have something that shows plenty of ripe fruit but also has a little bit of an earthy, dry finish. At home, we sip the Uve di Montepulciano as a cocktail when we just want a pleasant glass of red. And we pair it up with barbequed chicken, pork chops, and grilled veggies all year long. I think you are going to flip when you taste it because it is layered and complex and yet it is remarkably affordable due to our excellent relationship with the folks at Small Vineyards. Buy yourself a case this week and then you’ll have plenty of delicious but affordable red wine in the house that you can open or give away anytime the mood strikes.
Food Pairing:
We make homemade pizzas either in the oven or out back on the big green egg at least once a month. This Montepulciano has been a perfect fit for those little pies at our house and I’m sure it will be at your’s too.
