Señorio de la Antigua Mencía 2012

Oh boy, we’ve got some cool stuff for you this week! Mencia is an ancient indigenous Spanish grape varietal that is often used in blended reds to add peppery spice and meatiness. But this week’s special, from Senorio de la Antigua, is a 100% Mencia that showcases the grape’s style and intensity. The 2012 vintage is slowly working its way towards maturity but it isn’t there yet and, as a result, this brash 90 Pointer has gobs of fruit and spice. The initial pop of crushed red currants, tart cherries, and raspberry preserves is augmented by layers of nutmeg, game, stewed prune, grilled herbs, and anise creating a wonderfully voluptuous effect that seems to quickly entrance you as soon as the first sip touches your lips. The sanguine finish is thoroughly complete with dusty tannins supporting notes of premium balsamic vinegar, tobacco leaf, and iron rich soil. Drink this beauty over the next 5ish years and serve it alongside hearty dishes like Morroccan chicken, carne adobada, or flank steak with chimichurri.
Food Pairing:
An exotic wine like the 2012 Senorio de la Antigua Mencia deserves to be paired with a similarly exotic meal. My cooking is probably a good bit less exotic than yours (since I have to accommodate picky kids) but I still like to mix it up a bit. One of my favorites is grilled rare lamb t-bones rubbed with yellow curry and served alongside chickpeas that were gently simmered in chicken stock and a really delicate curry blend from Savory Spice Shop called Marakesh Moroccan Spice which is so aromatic and fresh that using it immediately perfumes the entire kitchen. I like to drizzle the whole thing very lightly with my old standby sauce that contains equal parts of warm hoisin sauce and cherry preserves thinned at the last moment with the juices from resting the lamb after cooking.
