De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon 2008

To call a wine mind-blowing is a pretty strong statement, but this week’s “Wine of the Week” fits the bill! The De Bortoli Noble One is an icon in the world of dessert wines. If you have never had a truly exceptional late harvest wine then one sip of this extraordinary “sticky” will be enough to change your entire worldview. On the other hand, if you are a fan of dessert wines then you are going to want to call us immediately to reserve your bottles because there simply aren’t enough of them for everyone. This exquisite effort showcases the kind of balance and symmetry that is so rarely achieved in the world of wine. Luscious, intense, mouth coating sweetness is flawlessly balanced by perfect natural acidity to create a flavor that simply must be tasted in order to be believed. This wine will pair up with a cheese plate incomprehensibly well today or it can be saved to commemorate a special occasion a decade or more from now. Be warned though, we got our hands on every bottle we could but there aren’t very many of them to go around. So please give us a call to order your bottles over the phone so that you don’t miss out on this collectible 94 point masterpiece!
On to the Tasting Notes:
While everyone here at the store loves them, dessert wines aren’t exactly one of our most popular categories. Often times our customers equate sweet wines with cheap wines. But in the upper echelon of dessert wines that just isn’t the case. I am lucky enough to have had the opportunity to sample several vintages of some of the world’s finest dessert wines and I can tell you that I have really acquired a taste for them. There’s something magical about it when a wine can be both incredibly sweet and incredibly crisp at the same time that is very difficult to describe. But once you’ve had some aged Chateau d’Yquem or a fine German TBA then you will never be able to look at sweet wines the same way again. This week’s special, the 2008 De Bortoli Noble One deserves to be placed into the same category as those iconic wines. It offers a glimpse into the world of uber-wine.

Massively rich, full of fruit, and yet eye-poppingly bright and fresh. At this early stage of its evolution the Noble One’s character is still dominated by fruit. It explodes onto the palate with notes of fresh apricots, juicy white peaches, mango, and tangerine. It has such impressive density as a result of nearly 240 grams of dissolved sugar per liter (or nearly 24% sugar by weight). The mouthfeel in a lesser wine with this level of sweetness would be like drinking maple syrup but that is just not the case with the Noble One. Instead it has the kind of acidity that gives it lift, brightness, and flawless proportion. It is a wine to contemplate as you slowly sip it. As it ages, you’ll find that the fruit begins to fade out of the front of the palate which makes way for notes of almond skin, golden raisins, freshly grated ginger, peach brandy, and that unmistakable earthy botrytis scent. Farther down the evolutionary line you’ll find that it takes on a sort of tawny port-like note that delivers hints of licorice, toasted nuts, anise, candied ginger, potpourri, and fruit leather.
Food Pairing:
Look, you could pair this stuff up with the spare tire from your car and it would still taste great. It’s just that good. But if you really want to blow your guests minds then try your hand at a gorgonzola souffle. The creamy blue cheese and the wonderfully sweet wine will pair up for you in a way that simply must be tasted to be believed. Souffle a bit much for you to tackle? Fear not. Just grab an assortment of aged cheeses from the fine folks upstairs at Whole Foods to make a killer cheese plate. Cheese for dessert isn’t your thing? No problem there either. Pairing the Noble One up with a little creme brulee will create a sensation in your mouth that is probably illegal in several Southern States.
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
