Trivento "Amado Sur" Malbec Bonarda Syrah Blend

Oh boy do we have a fun wine for you this week! Trivento’s Amado Sur is a wonderfully modern interpretation of a Malbec based red blend. It is so thoroughly ripe and juicy that your guests will be in heaven when you pull the cork at your next holiday get together. A deeply aromatic nose sets the stage for good things to come as it displays dark notes of warm blueberry pie, freshly plucked rose petals, and cigar box. The palate is super rich and creamy with abundant notes of ripe plums, juicy raspberries, and a hint of tangy bramble. It finishes with a tremendous sweetness of fruit intertwined with touch peppery spice and a hint of earthy cocoa. It’s the sort of bottle that you can confidently pour for guests with even the most discerning palates. The lush texture, concentrated fruit flavor, and smooth creamy finish make this wine the total package. Please stop by the store tonight to taste this crowd pleaser for free. We think that once you do you’ll pick up a six pack without a moment’s delay. It really is that good!
On to the Tasting Notes:
This week we may have found the perfect wine for holiday entertaining. A thoroughly rich and expansive mouthfeel combines with a generous sweetness of fruit and a pleasant dose of warming spice to create a fantastic multi-purpose red. Surprising amounts of depth and complexity come from blending a healthy dose of old vine Malbec with a splash of Bonarda for structure and a dose of Syrah for richness. The final product, Amado Sur, delivers gobs of ripe fruit flavor with just enough structure to pair up nicely with a wide range of meals.

I pulled the cork on my bottle and poured a glass straight away. As soon as I verified that the wine wasn’t flawed I sat down to write this review. Within seconds of pouring it into my glass lovely aromas of ripe blueberries and sweet tobacco leapt out to greet me. I love to have wine like this bottle of Amado Sur around the house because it delivers a lot of depth and interest as soon as you pour the first glass. You won’t have to worry about decanting this one for hours before it starts to give up its secrets. Instead, you can pull the cork and go when unexpected company shows up or the first bottle goes dry a bit more quickly than you expected it to. I went in for a sip and was immediately rewarded with juicy flavors of raspberry preserves, roasted plums, tart black currants, and a touch of bittersweet chocolate. The texture was round and juicy without any of the hard edges that we often associate with young Bonarda and Syrah. I noticed a hint of silky tannin up front and a pleasant shot of warming, boozy spice in the back. The finish displayed notes of bramble, incense, and humble earth as well as a nicely integrated hint of pithy bitterness that lingered for quite a while after I swallowed.

I don’t think that the Amado Sur was intended to be a wine that would stand up to extended cellaring. It was built for near term consumption as evidenced by its plush juicy style and generously fruited profile. That said, I think it will hold up nicely for the next year or so and may even improve a bit over the next couple of months as the fruit settles down. Either way, I don’t see any need to delay gratification. Buy yourself a six pack or two and keep it around through the holiday season and into the heart of the winter. Open a bottle whenever you need a delicious wine in a flash.
Food Pairing:
The fact of the matter is that Amado Sur was built for pleasure. It would be at home with little more than a glass and a smile. But if you wanted to pair it up with a fun meal then I suggest something that incorporated some bleu cheese. Maybe a classic black and bleu burger with little crumbles of bleu cheese and some Worcestershire sauce mixed into the meat before grilling. The tangy and slightly salty notes that you add to the meat will provide a pleasant pairing to the sweetly fruited profile of this young red. Don’t be afraid to guild the lily by adding a side of roasted new potatoes tossed with good olive oil and some black truffle salt.
